For some couples, becoming pregnant is a challenge. Ten to 15 percent of couples in India are infertile. Infertility is the inability to get pregnant despite having frequent, unprotected sex for at least a year. Although many couples are really subfertile rather than infertile, they are often considered infertile when they haven’t conceived despite trying for one year.
This is usually the point to start seeking medical support as the monthly chance of pregnancy is 4 percent or less after one year. A faster evaluation may be appropriate for women over the age of 35, when there are known medical conditions that interfere with fertility, or if trying to conceive causes significant stress.
